Error No License Keys Installed

KMS isn't so bad. It is of course on the way out, to be replaced by Active Directory-based Activation in Server 2012, but KMS will stick around until all of our Server 2008 R2 machines are out of production. Given that we still manage some Windows 2003 servers (if we must), I think it's fair to assume we'll still be using KMS well into the next decade.

No product keys are installed on the system. If you are using MAK activation, install a MAK product key. If you are using KMS activation, check the Pid.txt file (located on the installation media in the sources folder) for a KMS Setup key. Install the key.

One of our clients has an environment running KMS on Windows Server 2008 R2. In June of last year, they started deploying Windows Server 2012 R2 servers. The KMS server had previously been patched to support Server 2012 and 2012 R2 KMS clients. Because no one complained in June, I had assumed that someone had activated the proper key on the KMS server to support the new version.

In December, he reported that his newest servers weren't activating properly.

  1. There's no 'Partial product key' line. The two (glaringly obvious in retrospect) lines that report 'license not in use' and 'Status: Unlicensed.' I glossed over these initially because I assumed that this state was referring to the local machine's usage of the key, or lack thereof, as it was Server 2008 R2.
  2. /ipk key: Change the Windows product key. Replaces the current product key if present. /ilc file: Install a license file. /rilc: Reinstall system license files. /rearm: Reset the evaluation period/licensing status and activation state of the computer. Use /rearm-app to specify an app, or /rearm-sku for a specific sku.

Their two most recently deployed servers were reporting activation errors. I logged into one of the machines that was reporting activation errors and ran the trusty activation command:

Error: 0xC004F074
The Software Protection Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information.

The first thing I do, naturally, was just to make sure my KMS server was in fact reachable from this machine. It was. Then, I started to dive into the rabbit-hole that is KMS troubleshooting:

  • Ensure the domain _VLMCS DNS records are correct
  • Ensure the Software Protection Service (sppsvc) is in fact running on the KMS server
  • Ensure that the proper KMS key and channel (VOLUME_KMS_2012-R2 channel) shows up in the KMS server's licensing (slmgr /dlv all)
  • Double-check that MS KB2885698 is installed to add support for newer operating systems on a Windows 2008 R2 KMS host

At first blush, everything appeared to be fine. So then I refer back to the application event log, hoping against hope that the 'additional information' wasn't some weird circular reference. I found this error in the Windows Application log:

You can actually see the text of the slui.exe errors with a command like this, run on a Windows machine with a GUI (i.e., not Core):

Which pops up a helpful 'An error has occurred' window, with an optional details pane that indeed reports the exact text of the error message that we started with.

So I've got a KMS server that looks just fine that my new servers are complaining about.

So what's the problem?

It turns out that the KMS server was in fact missing the proper key.

The reason I overlooked this problem in step 3 of my troubleshooting above was that the KMS server output for that channel looked valid, but had a few problem indicators that I missed.

So what's wrong?

  1. The Extended PID and Installation ID fields are empty. These appear to be added when a successful activation for the key is completed.
  2. There's no 'Partial product key' line.
  3. The two (glaringly obvious in retrospect) lines that report 'license not in use' and 'Status: Unlicensed.'

I glossed over these initially because I assumed that this state was referring to the local machine's usage of the key, or lack thereof, as it was Server 2008 R2. My assumption was supported by the very high number of 'Requests with License Status Licensed'. Finally, Google searches regarding these lines was wholly inconclusive.

As a troubleshooting step, I asked my client for their 2012 R2 KMS key. I then installed the key and performed activation (slmgr /ipk ; slmgr /ato ). This of course solved the problem entirely, altered the output to fix all of the issues I described above, and allowed my downstream KMS clients to activate to their heart's content.

It's also worth noting that when I attempted to preform the activation of the proper channel before installing the key, slmgr gave back a cryptic, yet accurate error:

Error: product not found

In retrospect, also true! Might be more useful to say something like 'the activation ID you're attempting to activate doesn't have a product key associated with it,' but that's just one man's opinion.

Error Messages and Solutions

Here are some potential causes and things to try if you encounter this error:

  • You entered an invalid or expired license key, or there are no more available seats.
  • Use lowercase letters when you enter your email address.
  • License keys are case sensitive. Copy and paste the license key in the same format it was provided.
  • Ensure you have a valid license key for the products you are trying to activate.
  • Check your system to see which environment you are trying to activate in. For example, a Server OS environment requires a license key that allows for this.
  • Contact your license administrator or sales representative to obtain a new license key.

The activation file used to activate a license for an offline computer is unreadable or invalid. Contact your license administrator to obtain a new offline activation file. Visit Activate License Offline for more information.

A license key for an add-on product has been activated without an active base product (Alteryx Designer or Alteryx Server).

The license key for an add-on product was activated, but it cannot be used because Alteryx Designer or Alteryx Server must be activated as well.

Contact your license administrator to obtain a new license key for Alteryx Designer or Alteryx Server. Visit Activate Alteryx for more information.

This machine is out of compliance with your organization's license agreement.

An Alteryx Server license was activated on a machine that has more cores than the number of cores for which it is licensed. To find out how Alteryx defines cores for licensing its products, visit this Alteryx Community article.

Contact your license administrator to obtain a new license key for additional server CPU cores. Visit Manage Licenses for more information.

It appears that you do not have Administrator or Power User privilege. Licenses installed may only be available to the currently logged-in user. Some other functionality may not be available.

You were signed-in as a non-administrative user of the machine when you activated a product. If you want the license to be available to all users of the machine, please run the install and license process as Administrator.

Follow these steps to resolve the feature API is not licensed error.

  1. Email fulfillment@alteryx.com to check that the license you want to activate has the API Feature.
  2. Remove and readd licenses.
    1. Remove license.
    2. Clear the files from C:ProgramDataSRCFlexeraLicenseManager if any exist.
    3. Readd the license.
  3. On the machine running the Alteryx Engine (if Designer or single node server, this is the local machine) check these items:
    • The account running the Alteryx Engine Command has these permissions on the installation folder:
      • Read & Execute
      • List Folder Contents
      • Read
    • If running Alteryx Server, restart the Alteryx Service.
  4. If activating onlinevia a license key, be sure that you have constant communication with whitelist.alteryx.com. The Engine checks its licensing via FNO on every call to the engine.
Deactivated license on first machine, cannot reactivate on second machine.

Reach out to fulfillment@alteryx.com to deactivate the old device.

This error message indicates that the machine is having issues with connecting to the Alteryx activation service. This is typically due to the firewall/proxy on the machine. Please follow these instructions:

  1. First, check that you meet the technical specifications to instal and run Alteryx.
  2. Make sure that Port 80 or Port 443 is open.
  3. The System Requirements of the licensing system require access to whitelist.alteryx.com. Please make sure that your organization's network has not blocked communication to this endpoint.
  4. If your organization uses a proxy, be aware that the activation request packets are encrypted and can be blocked.

Note that you might require your IT team's assistance with the above items.

Alternatively, you can do an offline activation with a license file. Follow the instructions at Activate License Offline.

The license administrator of the key needs to revoke a seat in order for a new user to activate. Instructions for the license administrator are listed below. If you're unsure who the license admin on your account is, please email fulfillment@alteryx.com.

For license administrators:

  1. Sign in to licenses.alteryx.com.
  2. Go to Machines > Administer Machines.
  3. Change the search filter on the right side to License Key.
  4. Paste the license key and select Search.
  5. To revoke the license key, select the email.
  6. Select Action > Revoke Licenses.
  7. Enter the Quantity to remove.
  8. Save.

To resolve the Your computer is not connected to your License Server error message, follow these instructions:

  1. Select OK on the error message (or 'X' depending on your version of Alteryx).
  2. Select the gear icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Change License Systems.
  4. Select Continue on the Change License Systems window.
  5. Note that you might need to activate your license key again.

To resolve the One of the Input Parameters is Bad error, please try to activate offline with a license file. Follow the instructions at Activate License Offline.

There are 2 ways to fix this error:

Free License Keys

  • Upgrade to version 2019.4 or newer.
  • Activate via command line.

Upgrade to 2019.4

Error No License Keys Installed Free

The 2019.4 version of Alteryx does not encounter this error as it was fixed with the update. If you sign in to the license portal at licenses.alteryx.com and download the most recent version of Alteryx, this fixes the issue.

Activate via Command Line

Follow these instructions to activate via command line:

  1. Go to Alteryx Overview (Activate by Command Line).
  2. Within the Activate by Command Line section, navigate to Standard License System > Activate License Online. This section outlines the script needed to complete the activation.
Server was not able to process request correctly or mismatch error (Offline).

The Server was not able to process request correctly error is caused by mixed casing between the serial number used to activate and the serial number in FNO. For example, this error is triggered when a user attempts to activate with JohnDoe@gmail.com but the serial in FNO is johndoe@gmail.com.
